Chapter 016

Iketani's Valuable Lesson (池谷の貴重な体験, Iketani no Kichō na Taiken, "Iketani's Valuable Experience") is the sixteenth chapter of Initial D.

Plot[]

Takumi is confused by Iketani's request, saying that he'd probably just get bored sat next to him on a downhill run. Takumi is ok with it, but says he'd need to get Bunta's permission to take the car. Yuichi is impressed with Bunta's method of making Takumi such a good driver.

At home, Takumi asks to use the car, and is surprised when Bunta says he can use it.

On the top of Akina, Iketani is excited to go on a downhill run with Takumi. The two of them head off down the course, and Iketani thinks to himself that he'll easily be able to copy Takumi's technique. The Eight-Six fires into the first corner, much faster than Iketani expected, causing him to scream in terror. Takumi continues to speed through the pass, with Iketani unable to comprehend how he can control the car going so fast. Takumi enters into the third corner, and taps the car against the guardrail. Iketani starts to faint, and is shocked to see Takumi completely unphased by his own speed. Takumi drives Iketani back up the mountain, and the SpeedStars are shocked to see him completely passed out.

Tokyopop/Kodansha USA (2019) version[]

  • Iketani talks about feeling like he's waiting for a rollercoaster at Nagashima Spa Land, an amusement park in Mie Prefecture. This appears to have been a deliberate change (possibly to avoid copyright), as the original mentions Space Mountain.
    • Tokyopop give further information about the park, referencing one of its rides, Steel Dragon 2000. This ride did not exist when the chapter was originally published.
    • Most of the American audience would likely have been aware of the ride, as a version of Space Mountain exists at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
