When the Smiling Ends (スマイルが止まる時, Sumairu ga Tomaru Toki, "When the Smile Stops") is the two hundred and thirty-third chapter of Initial D.
Plot[]
Sakai notices that Keisuke has been gaining on him since the third hairpin, but refuses to lose to him. Keisuke takes the next corner much tighter than the Integra, narrowing the distance between them.
Takumi asks Matsumoto if he has any ideas who's winning the uphill race, but he isn't sure, as there are a lot of strategies involved. Takumi thinks Keisuke stands a chance of winning, as the strategy for the course is mostly based on how you come out of the hairpins.
The two cars head into the fourth and final hairpin. Sakai admits that the hairpins are the only part of the course that the Integra struggles with, as the front wheel drive nature of the car means it doesn't have as much traction in lower gears. He expects Keisuke to gain on him in the corners, but he intends to pull another trick before the finish line to force him back. Sakai takes the inside line on the hairpin, while Keisuke closes the gap between them.
