Initial D (頭文字D, Inisharu Dī) is a 1999 Japan-exclusive racing video game developed and published by Kodansha for the PlayStation. It is the third game to be based on the Initial D series. The game mainly consists of a story mode that loosely follows the main plot of the manga up to Takumi Fujiwara's battle against Kyoichi Sudo with additional content added afterwards however with the omission of Shingo Shoji and his battle.
Gameplay[]
Game Modes[]
The game offers three primary modes:[2][3][4]
- Story Mode:
Players progress through races tied together by original cutscenes, presented via static CG images and FMV sequences. While the story mode loosely aligns with the early plotline of the manga, it diverges with unique elements like a showdown against Bunta Fujiwara, in the AE86. Subsequent playthroughs unlock additional content, such as alternative endings and hidden vehicles.
- Free Running Mode
Free Running Mode is divided into four different modes: 1P, where the player can race around by themselves; 1P vs 2P, where the player can play with a second player using split-screen multiplayer; 1P vs COM, where the player can race against the computer; and D-Check, a mission-based mode where the objective is to clear certain parts of Akina as cleanly and as quickly as possible.
The player is able to select their vehicle, choose between manual and automatic transmission, and allocate points to upgrade the car's torque, handling, and grip. Additionally, players can select their course, deciding whether to run an uphill or downhill race, and choose to race at midnight or during the daytime.
