Initial D Arcade Stage 5 (頭文字D Arcade Stage 5, Inisharu D Arcade Stage 5) is a 2009 racing arcade game developed by Sega AM3 and published by Sega Corporation. It was developed for the Sega Lindbergh arcade system and was the last in the series to be developed on the system. It is the fifth game in the Initial D Arcade Stage series and the fourteenth video game to be based on the Initial D series.
The game features a drastic overhaul of physics and driving mechanics compared to Initial D Arcade Stage 4, tweaking core gameplay mechanics such as braking and taking corners. A new, limited-time mode called Driver’s Event Mode was introduced through Sega’s ALL.Net network service, allowing players to compete in nationwide events and time attack challenges under specific regulations (such as mountain passes and drivetrain types). The scale of these events varies from local (regional or prefectural) to national levels.[4][5]
The game retains all game modes from the previous title, with the Legend of the Streets story mode now expanding to include new rivals and courses from the first part of the Kanagawa Expedition arc of Initial D. Several previously featured courses have also been redesigned, including Akina and Myogi, while Nagao makes its debut.[6] Happogahara, which previously appeared in Initial D Arcade Stage Ver. 3, is also reintroduced.[4][7]
New character rivals are added to the game, including members of Team 246 and Racing Team Katagiri Street Version, such as Satoshi Omiya, Kobayakawa, Kai Kogashiwa (Nagao Variant), and Hideo Minagawa. The Fake Project D characters also make an appearance, along with Tomoyuki Tachi, who last appeared in Arcade Stage Ver. 3.[4][8]
Five new vehicles have been added to the game, many of which were highly requested by players: Toyota Supra RZ (JZA80), Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII GSR (CT9A), Mazda Roadster RS (NB8C), Toyota MR-S S-Edition (ZZW30), and Mazda RX-7 Type RS (FD3S).[7] Thus totaling the vehicle count in the game to thirty-one vehicles.[4]
Players could also transfer their IC Card data from Arcade Stage 4, allowing them to retain their driver name, vehicles, tuning parts, My Character customization, driving class, and other data in Arcade Stage 5.[4][9]
