"Where Initial D Left Off, Initial D v.2 Breaks Through!"
―North American release tagline

Initial D Arcade Stage Ver. 2 (頭文字イニシャルD Arcade Stage Ver. 2, Inisharu D Arcade Stage Ver. 2), known internationally as Initial D Ver. 2, is a 2002 racing arcade game developed by Sega Rosso and published by Sega Corporation. It was developed for the Sega NAOMI 2 arcade system and later ported to the PlayStation 2 in 2003 as Initial D Special Stage. It is the second game in the Initial D Arcade Stage series and the eighth video game to be based on the Initial D series.

The game introduces several new features not present in its predecessor, including two additional courses, Akagi and Irohazaka, as well as the weather condition of rain being added. Seven new characters have been added to the Legend of the Streets story mode, including the Two Guys From Tokyo, Sakamoto, Kenta Nakamura, Toru Suetsugu, Nobuhiko Akiyama, Kyoko Iwase, and Kenji. Additionally, seven drivable vehicles have been added: Corolla Levin SR (AE85), Altezza RS200 Z Edition (SXE10), RX-7 Spirit R Type A (FD3S), Suzuki Cappuccino (EA11R), Eunos Roadster (NA6CE), Silvia Q's (S14), and Celica GT-Four (ST205).[4]

A new "Challenge Bunta" mode was added that allows players to battle against Bunta Fujiwara. In the Time Attack mode, a lecture feature has been added where Ryosuke Takahashi provides feedback based on the player's driving performance after completing a run.[5]

Opening sequence[]

The opening starts with a shot of Irohazaka. As the song begins to play, it begins to feature Takumi's AE86 driving through the pass. It later cuts through a re-enactment of different battles from the series such as Keisuke's race with Kyoko, Takumi's race with Sakamoto, as well as Takumi's race with Kai Kogashiwa. It finally cuts through Takumi's race with Kyoichi Sudo, with the former beating him at the end of the 3rd bridge.

Trivia[]

  • During the opening sequence, Keisuke's race with Kyoko and Takumi's race with Sakamoto take place in Irohazaka. This is likely because neither Sadamine or Maze Pass appear in the game.
  • The game contained a bug that causes the body color of the Integra Type R to change when data is transferred from the previous game. The bug was acknowledged on December 13, 2002[citation needed], three days after the game released, and a notice was posted on the official website detailing the planned solution. In 2003, the ROM was replaced with a revised one, and it became possible to change the body color of the Integra once if the user had already used the Integra.[6]
