Initial D Fourth Stage (頭文字D Fourth Stage, Inisharu D Fourth Stage) is a 2004-2006 Japanese anime television series and the sixth installment in the anime adaptation of the Initial D manga by Shuichi Shigeno. The stage adapts Chapter 192 to 424 of the manga (Volumes 17 to 32) and serves as a continuation of the Initial D Third Stage film. It originally aired on SKY PerfecTV! PPV from April 2004 to February 2006, spanning 24 episodes, and was animated by A.C.G.T and directed by Tsuneo Tominaga.
In October 2003, series producer OB Planning announced that Initial D Fourth Stage was in production, with production having begun earlier in June 2003.[2][3] In November 2003, OB Planning showcased images on their official website from a vehicle recording session for Fourth Stage at the Maze Sea Circuit, featuring cars driven by Keiichi Tsuchiya.[4] In December 2003, OB Planning announced that Fourth Stage would begin airing in April 2004 on SKY PerfecTV! PPV, Channel 183.[5] Additional information revealed that the series would utilize cel-shaded graphics to blend the CG vehicle models with traditional animation. It was also announced that a special behind-the-scenes feature and recap, titled Initial D to the Next Stage – The Way to Project D, would air prior to the premiere of Fourth Stage.[6]
This was the final installment in the series to receive an English dub by Funimation.

Anime and Manga Differences[]
- In Act 1, the flashback of Takumi and Natsuki Mogi’s conversation at Lake Akina differs from its portrayal in Third Stage and the manga. In Third Stage, after Takumi shares his dream with Natsuki, she runs to hug him, and they promise to meet again in the future. In the manga, however, Takumi reveals his dream to Natsuki while sitting inside his car.
- Most scenes involving Kyoko Iwase and her Friend aren't adapted to the anime.
- In the manga, the race between Keisuke Takahashi and Kozo Hoshino takes place after Takumi Fujiwara's battle with Toshiya Joshima. In the anime, however, the order of these races is reversed.
Trivia[]
- This is the first television series stage presented in widescreen. While not exactly 16:9, it features a Letterbox Vista Size format, with black bars added to the top and bottom of the screen, resulting in an aspect ratio of 1.85:1.
