Ryuichi Katsumata (勝又 隆一, Katsumata Ryūichi, born February 7, 1961) is a Japanese composer, arranger, and musician who has worked on music for video games, anime, and various artists. He composed the original score for the Initial D anime series, spanning Initial D First Stage to Initial D Third Stage, as well as all the Initial D Audio Dramas. Katsumata also composed the music for the Initial D Magazine CD Book, which predated the anime adaptation.[2]

In addition to his work on Initial D, Katsumata has composed for animated series such as Arcade Gamer Fubuki, Honō no Tōkyūji: Dodge Danpei, and The Wonderful Galaxy of Oz, and has composed music in video games such as Yoake no Mariko, Gran Turismo and Bravely Default: For the Sequel.[3][2]

Biography[]

After graduating in 1983 from the Instrumental Music Department (Piano Major) at Musashino Academia Musicae (武蔵野音楽大学), Ryuichi Katsumata began his career performing in numerous tours and live events with various artists.[1]

In 1987, he expanded his work to include studio production, focusing primarily on music arrangement while also dedicating himself to composition and keyboard performance. He actively manipulates his arranged works, including synthesizer programming and sequencing.[1]

From 1995 to 1997, Katsumata was the keyboardist for the Japanese pop rock band Kome Kome Club, performing under the alias Juliano Katsumata (ジュリアーノ勝又). During his tenure, he contributed to three of the band’s albums released during this period and served as an arranger for seven of the fourteen tracks on their 1997 album PUSHED RICE.[4][5]

Katsumata’s career spans a diverse range of activities, including artist recordings, special projects, and anime productions. In addition, he is involved in sound production for tours and continues to contribute as both a performer and producer.[1]
